French Open (May'12)

A short post

My flight to Havana was from Paris, and my timing, for a change, *was* perfect so I decided to spend a few days in Paris and watch some tennis.

Of course, because I had not planned in advance, getting tickets for Roland Garros was not easy. I did a bit of frantic searching on the net but couldn’t find anything less than Euro 200 for a ticket (which I was not willing to pay).

There are a total of 18 courts at Roland Garros – of which Court Philippe Chatrier and Court Suzanne Lenglen are show courts. So you either get tickets for one of these (which allows you entry into the ‘outside’ courts too) or you get a ticket which only gets you entry in the ‘outside’ courts.

I was finally able to get tickets from a resale site – for one day I only managed the ‘outside’ court tickets and for the other day I did get tickets to the Court Philippe Chatrier.

A day at Roland Garros is very well spent. You flit in and out of the courts watching matches. At some of the outer courts you are so close to the action that you can literally touch the players. I was able to see quite a few big (and not so big) names – Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, Maria Sharapova, Ana Ivanovic.

But I was lucky to have seen all the Indian players in action – Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi, Sania Mirza, and Rohan Bopanna. Leander was the most gracious of the lot – he was really patient with me as I tried to get a photo with him.

Wimbledon. Check. French Open. Check.
