Coup and Curfew in Chiang Mai (May'14)

Having been to Bangkok earlier, and wanting to avoid traps like Krabi and Phuket, I headed north to Chiang Mai. I was pleased to be away from Bangkok’s hustle and bustle in this easy-to-manage town.

One evening after a day of hectic sightseeing, which consisted of visiting far too many Pagodas, I was looking forward to watching some Thai boxing (Muay Thai) after dinner. As I was eating my India meal (yes!) and checking the news, I found out that there had been a Coup in Thailand. The army had taken over and they’d announced a curfew every day from ten at night till six in the morning. My first reaction was ‘there goes kick boxing tonight.’

Fortunately, my hotel had a number of bars close by, so I drank the coup away…
